Shopify Markets or an expansion store?

Markets is the default in 2026. An expansion store is the exception you have to argue for. Both are expensive to unwind, so decide it once, with finance in the room.

Three things people get wrong
These are the assumptions that turn a clean launch into an expensive replatform.
Plan changes everything
Below Plus you get three markets, no per market catalogues and no per market theme customisation. Stores that already had those customisations live before 25 April 2025 kept them. Check before promising anything.
A local domain is not a reason
Markets supports a country domain per market with automatic hreflang, canonicals and per market sitemaps. Wanting a .co.nz or .co.uk address is not on its own a case for a second store.
Nothing syncs between stores
Shopify does not sync products, inventory, customers or orders across separate stores. Middleware or a PIM fills that gap, and it is the cost most often missed at quoting time.
